C’est à la fin du 19e siècle que le Canada a vu sa plus forte expansion, soutenu par le déploiement du rail d’un côté à l’autre du continent. Canadian Pacific Railway, premier chemin de fer transcontinental du Canada, fut l’instrument de la colonisation et du développement économique du Canada occidental.
Filiale du Chemin de fer Canadien Pacifique, Canadian Pacific Hotels a construit des hôtels et centres de villégiature le long du chemin de fer, entre le Pacifique et l’Atlantique. Ces hôtels accueillaient à l’origine les passagers des trains, pour qu’ils puissent se reposer et se restaurer.
Le développement de Canadian Pacific Hotels a débuté avec l’ouverture en 1888 de l’Hotel Vancouver et du Banff Springs Hotel, dans les rocheuses Canadiennes. Parmi les hôtels mythiques de la compagnie, nous pouvons retenir The Empress Hotel à Victoria, le Chateau Lake Louise en Alberta, et le légendaire Chateau Frontenanc à Québec. Les hôtels Canadian Pacific sont tous classés dans la catégorie des cinq étoiles.
À la fin du 20e siècle, Canadian Pacific s’oriente vers un développement externe par l’achat des hôtels de son concurrent Canadian National Railway en 1988 et les hôtels Delta et Princess en 1998.
1999 est l’année charnière pour l’expansion internationale de Canadian Pacific, avec l’acquisition de Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, qui possède le fameux Plaza de New-York. Dans les mois qui ont suivi, le groupe hôtelier a pris le nom de Fairmont Hôtel & Resorts. Seul Delta a gardé sa dénomination pour ses hôtels.
Avec l’ouverture du Fairmont Dubai en 2002, ce fut les premiers pas du groupe en dehors de l’Amérique du Nord. L’extension s’est poursuivi en Europe avec le rachat du Grand Hôtel de Monaco en 2004, et le célèbre Savoy Hotel à Londres.
Ces hotels sont vraiment majestueux.. J’ai vu en “vrai” l’Empress de Victoria et le Frontenac de Québec… C’est magique.
